Two level house, upstairs steaming, downstairs freezing?
We have a single-zone A/C unit. My boyfriend went upstairs and looked at our insulation and the bottom of the attic is insulated but the ceiling/roof is not. Would adding insulation to that help?
What can we do to fix this problem?
I forgot to mention that we are located in Florida, so it's more a matter of the upstairs being unbearably hot and the downstairs being tolerable, or too cold if the a/c is turned on.
Just close the upstairs vent a little more then half way or all the way if needed. It sounds like the vents are open all the way and the downstairs is being robbed of heat, Heat will rise pretty much by it's self so you don't need the upstairs vents open so much in the winter, In the summer it will be the other way, because cold air sinks so you want the vents open all the way upstairs so you can cool your house from the top , down. 2 feet of insulation is good for the attic, and for the best bang for you buck, put a layer of the new stuff over what you have now, it looks like bubble wrap with foil on both sides, this stuff reflects radiant heat, so in the winter it will bounce the heat back into the house and in the summer it will bounce it back outside.
