Radio Shack Is The First Stop For DAB Portable Radio and Other Electrical Goods
Radio Shack is an electronics retailer with stores located all over North, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. According to a statistics made in 2003, there were some six thousand shops only in the United States, with a profit of two billion dollars. Over the years, there were ups and downs in the business evolution with stores being closed and reopened several times in the attempt to focus on the United States locations more. Radio Shack Corporation carried the name of Tandy Corporation but because of some complex reasons, the two corporations went on separate ways. Represented on the Internet too, Radio Shack is presently trying to cope with the impact of the 2008 financial losses and the sales decrease.
Radio Shack sells products branded with their names as well as items belonging to proprietary brands such as Gigaware that cover the computer, iPod and laptop accessories part, Presidian which includes flashlights, DAB portable radio, telephones, video and audio equipment, VoiceStar for wireless phone items, Duofone, once again with phones and accessories, Accurian, Enercell, Archer, Realistic and several others in the same market segment. Some of these brands were dropped and reintroduced over the years. This was the case with the Pure radios in the UK. With the growing popularity of digital radio, they reintroduced the brand. In particular the Pure One DAB FM portable radio white which went on to become {one of their best seller.~Over the years some brands got in and out of sales with the Optimus dropped in 2000 and reintroduced in 2005}.
Moreover, Radio Shack still has older products initially produced in the 80s, and the difference is obvious in the logo of the brand most of the time. When some of the items are moving more slowly in the stores, sometimes different generations of packages are available on the shelves depending on the manufacturing date. As for customer policy, until 2002, mailing lists were regularly created with the names and addresses of the clients. This also remains the common practice when you order a product that is out of stock or when returning an item.
Radio Shack allows a very easy access to different stores across the United States through the online map system too. There are all sorts of web tools that enable the visitor to identify the closest Radio Shack location by entering the zip code, the city and the street name. The usefulness of such a tool became apparent when people realized that it saves time to go somewhere closer and purchase exactly the same thing. Radio Shack also keeps its customers informed on the promotions via online ads or in local newspapers in the classified section. Remembering Transistor Pioneer Norman Krim (MAKE Magazine)
Right before the Christmas holidays, Norm Krim, a pioneer of transistor
technology and the father of the CK722 PNP Germanium Junction Transistor,
died. He was 98 years old. _IEEE Spectrum_ has a nice little "In Memoriam"
piece which even includes a shout-out to MAKE (Krim was an early champion of
DIY electronics and pushed to market the CK722 to hobbyists in the early
1950s)
