to get audio off of the phone line, you need to couple a matching transformer to the line via capacitors.

Go to Radio sHack and get a 600:1000 isolation transformer, also get two .47mfd ceramic disk capacitors.

from tip, thru one of the caps to the high side of the 600 side of the transformer.
from ring, thru the other cap to the low side of the 600 side of the transformer.

you now have a very basic network (a network is a coupler).

from the secondary of the transformer, feed it to the AUX input of your tape deck or sound card.
