Here Are Signs Of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss may strike at any age. Babies may actually experience hearing loss during the birth process. Normally, however, we expect hearing loss to happen as a part of the aging process. Here are some signs of hearing loss.

Persons with hearing loss may speak louder or softer than those around him. He may not even know that he is speaking loudly. Hearing loss not only affects how a person hears the voices of those around him, it can also affect how he hears his own voice. Persons aware of their hearing loss may over compensate and speak very quietly without even realizing what is happening.

If you notice that every time someone else enters the room they turn the volume down on the radio or television, this could be a sign of hearing loss. It is very easy to turn the volume up to compensate for your hearing loss.

People with Proline hearing aid batteries may have difficulty on hearing on the telephone. Some will actually stop using the telephone, without realizing that hearing loss is the problem. Fortunately, today most phones have built in volume controls that allow the user to turn up the volume in order to better hear the conversation. Another person may pick up your phone and make a comment about the volume as a sign of your hearing loss. Cell phones pose a totally different problem, as many of the ring tones simply blend into the background noise for persons with hearing loss. Many people with hearing loss have difficulty hearing conversations on cell phones, even when the volume is turned to high.

Some persons with hearing loss experienced the loss at an early age. In some ways, this may be an advantage as they learn to read lips to compensate for the loss. Some persons with significant hearing loss do not realize the loss until vision changes make it difficult for them to "hear." You may notice that lip readers position themselves in such a way as to have a direct line of sight with the other person in the conversation. Persons who read lips may have difficulty understanding persons with mustaches.

Some persons with hearing loss will dominate a conversation. They find it easier to continue talking rather than face a question that they may not understand.

Persons with ear hearing aids may find that families and friends are suddenly reminding them of promises of which the person with a hearing loss does not remember. As you subconscious brain tries to fill in the gaps that you did not hear, you may agree to something without realizing it. If this has ever happened to you, you made need to get batteries for hearing aids.

If you are experiencing signs of hearing loss see your hearing aid audiologist. He can examine your ears to see if there is a blockage in the ear canal caused by wax buildup or infection. If these problems are cleared up, hearing may return to normal.
